Five Outdoor Spring Gardening Tips

By: Amber Hunt, Apr 2nd 2021

Spring has sprung, and isn’t it so nice? The sunshine is intoxicating and makes me want to be outside all the time now. I’m usually more of an indoor gardener, but I’m thinking of branching out, and now is the perfect time to focus on outdoor plants and gardens. Read on for some spring gardening tips and tricks!

Clean Out the Garden!

Even if you live somewhere that’s nice all year round, starting fresh in the spring is a good idea for everyone. Go ahead and get in there with your gloves and gardening tools and remove all the debris that has collected over the fall and winter, which is most likely just a lot of dead leaves. This is generally not a super desirable chore, but will make your garden look so much cleaner and healthier in the long run. And, of course, this is a perfect time for the first lawn mowing of the year!

Add Fresh Soil and Mulch!

This is a rather important step because plants tend to grow much better in fresh soil, and the mulch will help fertilize it as well. It may help to test your soil to make sure you are giving it the correct nutrients to optimize plant growth. Be sure to add a generous amount of fresh soil, but not so much that the plant will struggle. Keeping the soil level will help keep it in place in case of heavy rainfall, so rake it as evenly as possible!

Trim Your Plants!

Time to get those pruners out and sharpened! Even in the winter your plants may have grown out a bit, so it’s important to make sure you trim them out of pathways, or trim off any dead parts so that the plant is not giving any extra energy to those portions. This will also help them grow anew now that the weather is getting nicer. Try to get to your blooming trees before they bud or you may stress them out and get smaller crops.

Put New Plants In!

This is the fun part, right? Well. The fun part is going to the nursery and getting to pick out all the new plants you will be adding to your garden. Especially now that indoor plants are all the rage, nurseries are popping up everywhere, which is pretty great in my opinion. All those wide open spaces with pretty plants everywhere - one of my happy places. Then you just have to get them home and put them in their spots in the garden amongst all that fresh new soil and you’re ready for the last tip!

Admire Your Work!

One of the great joys in life is being able to relax after a long day of hard work. So grab a glass of wine, your favorite outdoor chair, and maybe a book while you bask in the glorious garden that you created your very self!
