How to Get a Good Workout Without the Gym
I’ve never been much of a home workout kinda girl—well, if I’m being honest, I’ve never been much of a workout girl in general. However, I recently adopted a puppy and decided that I really need to get into shape to keep up with him. So, I started implementing a few simple things I can do from home to get into shape, and am adding a few more in this week’s blog that I am interested in and think might be helpful to others as well. So read on if you’re ready to feel better and healthier!
Get A Fitness Tracker
I have a Fitbit that I was mostly just using as a watch until recently, and now it’s been really helpful to me. I’ve been doing at least 10,000 steps a day for the last few weeks, and it’s always fun when you hit your daily goal and get a little digital fireworks show. Some of them also track your sleep and heart rate, which can be useful to know if you’re trying to be healthier. If you have a partner that also has a fitness tracker, it can add an extra level of fun to create a bit of competition for who can get the most steps every day!
Just Start Walking
Running has never been something I’ve been good at no matter how hard I try, but honestly, just starting out with a regular walk can do a lot of good for your heart and health. All that fresh air, natural inclines, and the sound of nature will really be a good start to your day. Now that I have two dogs again, walking them alone can be a workout, especially since we go twice a day. I love starting my day with a walk, and then winding down after work with a walk. It’s great for me and the dogs, and I’m sure I’ll only regret it once it starts raining again!
Get Into Yoga
I am still in the beginning stages of learning more about the history of yoga, but it was created in India over 5,000 years ago to help bring enlightenment to individuals who wanted to connect more to the universe. It focuses on breath control and meditation achieved through different poses or “asanas,” and can improve flexibility, help with back pain, and relieve stress. I am still learning to focus on my breathing (which is now increasingly more difficult with a nine-month-old puppy) but am hoping to get stronger and learn more so that I can fully reap the benefits of this wonderful practice!
Use Equipment
If you have the room in your living space, getting some equipment and having a set space for your workouts will get you in the right headspace for it. Even if it’s just in your bathroom with a set of weights, doing something is better than nothing. If you have room for an exercise bike or treadmill, those can be even more helpful, especially on days when the weather isn’t so pleasant and you really don’t want to leave your house. Even a jump rope or hula hoop or punching bag can really get your heart pumping! It really just depends on what you think will work for you and what you have space for. Home workouts are nice because you can cater your space just for you. You might even want to invest in an actual bicycle if you’re wanting to move on from walking and get outside for more exercise.
The possibilities are endless, and we’re rooting for you to start your fitness journey today!
