Four Fun Earth Day Activities
Happy Earth Day! It’s our annual reminder to respect and appreciate this beautiful planet that we live on. While it is nice to focus on our Earth once a year, there are fun activities we can do or plan all year round to help our planet out. If you’re interested in some easy activities you can do to celebrate our planet today and every day, read on!
#1 Plant Some Things
If you’ve been paying attention, you know how much I love my plants. While I am mostly a houseplant kind of girl, I will sometimes venture into outdoor plants, especially if they have pretty flowers. Gardening can help out the Earth in many ways, especially if you start growing your own herbs and food, depending on what you have space for. Plus, in my experience, it always tastes better when you grow it yourself. You can even plant a tree if you so please. My family and I used to plant one on my grandparents land every year and now those pine trees we planted are a beautiful reminder of Mother Nature!
#2 Join a Cleanup
Living in the city has taught me how incredibly messy people can be. Especially beaches. Finding cleanups in your area is easier than ever with social media today. Just find your local neighborhood Facebook page and ask if there is one happening, or start one yourself. Grab a trash bag and some gloves, and head on over to help clean up the parks in your area!
#3 Go Dark
This is a difficult one for many of us as we are all rather attached to our phones, and many of us are now attached to our computers for work as well. Even if you can’t do it during the week, maybe take a day once a month to just totally unplug. Turn off your phone, your tv, your computer, and just delight in the company of your family or friends or pets. Pick up that book you haven’t had time to read. Get back into a crafting hobby you started years ago. Get outside and enjoy the sunshine. You might even find that you enjoy not being so dependent on all of your technology - anything is possible!
#4 Take a Hike
This is something that I am starting to do more and more. There is so much beauty in this world, and even in my own area that I didn’t even know about. So maybe while you’re going dark, do some research and find a hike you think you can handle (if you’re a beginner like me, that is) and just enjoy it. Bask in the gloriousness of this Earth that we all too often take for granted. Take your time, listen to some birds, say hi to a stranger, look up at the trees and the amazing patterns that they make. You might be surprised at what Mother Nature has to offer!
So, this Earth Day and every day, take some extra time to appreciate this magnificent planet that we are all lucky enough to call home!
